COVID-19 Update 21-07-2020

Dear Parent/Carer

Risk assessment from September, changes to policies including uniform, PE uniform and arrangements from September

As today is the last day of term and I met with the Full Governing Body last night, I have decided on one short and final update to signpost you to some documents you may wish to access prior to the beginning of term in September.

Risk assessment from September

This is now on the website under the Parent tab, Covid-19 risk assessment. Governors have now ratified this document. I will also publish detailed operating procedures later in the summer holidays. They run to 39 pages and will replace any FAQs published so far. They may change a little due to changes in approach as Covid progresses so please bear with me. You will have them in good time.

Changes to policies including uniform

Due to the pandemic, schools and academies have been expected to update certain policies to reflect the current period. To this end, we have updated our safeguarding and child protection policies to include a Covid-19 section and the same for behaviour. In reality, very little has changed but some minor amendments have been made. Governors have supported a change to our uniform policy to reflect changing times. We have added one line about the length of trousers which I encourage you to take a look at prior to making any purchases for September. Governors have also supported the banning of all smartwatches in the Academy. This stance has been taken for a number of reasons, not least due to the value of these items but also because they are banned during all examination seasons and can cause disruption when they constantly sound in lessons.

All of these policies can be found on our website under the Policies tab.

PE uniform and arrangements from September

In September we will be returning to our full academy uniform. However, given the current situation, we will not be able to use our changing rooms; so on the days that your child has a PE lesson, we ask that they wear their full PE uniform.

It is important that the PE uniform guidance is strictly followed, in particular the guidance on additional kit. Students are only permitted to wear our PE fleece over their PE shirt along with plain, navy track suit bottoms that are plain in style. We also appreciate that it may not be comfortable for students to wear shorts all day, so they may wear plain, navy tracksuit bottoms at any time on their PE day. We cannot loan kit for the foreseeable future due to Covid-19.

Students will have outdoor PE if the weather is suitable. However, we will allocate suitable spaces if the weather is inclement and students will have lessons indoors if it is raining. We will not allow your child to get wet, as they will have to remain in their kit all day.

After telling you that my letter on Friday was my last one of the term, I am sorry to have to write to you again before the break with a lot of information to process. I do hope you find the time for a break during the coming weeks. I look forward to seeing our youngsters back in the Academy from 3 September in full. If in Years 7 or 12, transition day and sixth form induction will take place on 2 September.

In the meantime, in the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt “It is a good thing for everyone who can possibly do so to get away at least once a year for a change of scene. I do not want to get into the position of not being able to see the forest because of the thickness of the trees.”

I think I have reached that point. Take care and stay safe. I promise not to write for a few weeks.

Yours faithfully

Mr D Hardy

Head Teacher
